Five Researchers Awarded Funding from Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Professor Angers' proposed research will strive to develop new therapeutic strategies that can be applied in combination to overcome tumor heterogeneity and successfully target both cell types and cure GBM.

Amount: $818,550 over 5 years

Professor Piquette-Miller's research will examine the effect of preeclampsia and common inflammatory diseases on transporters in human placenta, examine what disease factors are responsible and the process by which this happens. Using experimental animal models, her team will examine the impact of changes in transporter abundance and maternal disease on the amount of drug that mothers and their unborn babies are exposed to.

Professor Wu has discovered a new treatment strategy that utilizes synergistic effect a biomaterial and an anticancer drug wrapped in tiny particles, namely nanoparticles. The nanoparticles will seek and destroy cancer cells and pro-tumoral cells.

Professor Wu and team will further advance the design and test this new nanomedicine for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, which is expected to reduce tumor growth and spread to other organs such as the lungs, lymph nodes, and the brain.

Professor Guilcher's proposed research is to fill a research gap through in-depth understanding of care journeys across the continuum for adults with hip fractures in urban and rural settings. The research team will then summarize the findings and share with patients, caregivers, providers, managers and decision-makers and discuss how we can improve care transitions for person with hip fractures within Ontario and across Canada.

Amount: $439,874 over 3 years

Professor Cadarette's research will produce evidence-based guidelines for long-term osteoporosis drug therapy capitalizing on longitudinal data available at ICES. This research will fill critical knowledge gaps identified during the 2019 Osteoporosis Canada Clinical Practice Guideline Update, and builds upon prior research that examined osteoporosis drug utilization, comparative effectiveness and safety of osteoporosis drugs, and methodological considerations in the study of osteoporosis drugs and general pharmacoepidemiologic studies.
