Plan Sponsors Moving into Pharmacy: What does the Future Look Like?
Outside of provincial drug plans, the largest payers of prescription drug benefits in Canada are large employers, multi-employer plans and Benefit Trusts. In the vast majority of cases, these large Plan Sponsors are self-insured and own all the financial liabilities associated with providing drug benefits to plan members. Unlike smaller insured plans that partner with Insurance Carriers, these large plans have autonomy to design their benefit plans how they see fit. In recent years, there have been multiple large Plan Sponsors begin the process of establishing their own pharmacy infrastructure. This presentation will highlight what is driving this trend, what the future looks like in this space, and where there may be significant opportunities for pharmacies across the country to collaborate on these initiatives to deliver privately funded clinical services.

Mike Sullivan co-founded Cubic Health in 2003 and serves as the company’s Chief Executive Officer. Cubic provides Plan Analytics, Predictive Analytics, Clinical Solutions, Machine Learning as a Service, and Pharmacy Services to self-insured health benefit plans ranging in size from 1,000 to over 500,000 employee lives. Cubic works with single- and multi-employer plans and Trusts to optimize the health of both plan members and the underlying benefits plan itself. Cubic’s unique capabilities in terms of integrating and making sense of underlying claims data and implementing customized, evidence-based solutions is driven by its proprietary analytics infrastructure and team of Clinical Pharmacists, Data Engineers, Data Scientists, and Software Developers. Mike began his career as a Community Pharmacist and has previous experience working in both the pharmaceutical and benefits consulting industries. Mike graduated from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Saskatchewan where he was honoured with a Centennial Alumni of Influence Award. He completed his Master of Business Administration degree from York University where he specialized in Finance.

Jonathan Nhan is the Interim Pharmacist Lead at Discovery Pharmacy. A graduate of the University of Toronto Leslie Dan of Pharmacy, Jon has spent over 10 years working in community practice.
