Artificial Intelligence Implementation in our Health Care System: Examples and Reflections

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has emerged as a transformative technological tool across many sectors, including healthcare. Within pharmacy, AI has been used to improve medication management and drug safety, assist with clinical decision making, streamline operations, and many other aspects of pharmacy practice. However, many gaps still exist for AI to be implemented safely and effectively. regarding the education of pharmacists and health care providers for the role of AI. Join us for a CPE Speaker Series event featuring two presentations and reflections on this important and emerging area of pharmacy practice.

Speaker: Osnat Melamed

Dr. Osnat Melamed is a Clinician Scientist in the Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute and a staff Addiction Physician at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. She is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto where she holds the 2023 New Investigator Award. Dr. Melamed is an early-career investigator with research interests in tobacco addiction and the intersections between substance use, mental health and gender. Dr. Melamed is interested in the use of technology for the delivery of treatment for substance addiction. She develops innovative digital health tools such as smartphone apps and AI-based chatbots to support individuals in quitting smoking. 

Speaker: Marwah Younis

Marwah is a healthcare strategist and entrepreneur with almost 20 years in public and private sector, combining technical and clinical knowledge to drive healthcare innovation, systemic change, and equitable access to quality and timely care for all. She co-founded Seamless Care Pharmacy and Seamless Care Digital Solutions, integrating innovative care models with technology to improve patient care, as well as Polymatiks, an AI-powered pricing strategy app for e-commerce retailers. As founder of Agate Medcare, a boutique healthcare consulting firm, Marwah has advised diverse clients towards strategic success. Marwah has completed her Bachelor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy, as well as MBA degrees all at the University of Toronto.

Discussant: Karim Keshavjee

Dr. Karim Keshavjee trained as a Family Physician and is the CEO of InfoClin, a company that provides health informatics consulting to a variety of organizations across North America. Karim was the architect and implementer of several community healthcare EMR initiatives, and his current research is focused on how to use artificial intelligence and machine learning, most recently in the service of diabetes prevention. Karim is an Assistant Professor and Program Director for the Master of Health Informatics program at the University of Toronto and a Visiting Scholar at Toronto Metropolitan University
