The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is currently seeking a Staff Pharmacist to join their team at the Ontario Poison Centre as a Specialist in Poison Information (SPI). The Ontario Poison Centre provides expert information and education via telephone to both the general public and healthcare professionals across Ontario and Manitoba, addressing exposures to poisonous substances and ensuring the safety of adults and children alike.
Following a comprehensive orientation, you will:
- Respond to poisoning and drug overdose calls involving both adult and pediatric exposures, providing timely, expert guidance over the phone.
- Assess patient status, develop and adapt evidence-based care plans, and evaluate their effectiveness all in collaboration with our inter-professional team of medical (or physician) toxicologists, pharmacists, nurses, and healthcare providers.
- Guide appropriate use of antidotes and other treatments of poisoned patients.
- Current registration in Part A of the Ontario College of Pharmacists
- Minimum 3 years experience in a hospital setting
- Fluency in English is preferred. Fluency in French is an asset
- Proficiency in a variety of Windows based applications is required, and strong keyboarding skills are necessary
- Demonstrated clinical competence and current knowledge base through continued education and lifelong learning
- Highly motivated individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work independently, as well as with the inter-professional team
- Excellent attention to detail and efficient time management skills
- Demonstrated resilience to adapt to an everchanging environment
- Ability to work under pressure and within a fast-paced environment
- Commitment to continuous learning, improvement and evidence-based practice
- A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity & inclusion
- Once you have achieved eligibility (approximately 2 years of full-time work as a SPI) it is an expectation that you write an examination to become a Certified Specialist as part of our Quality Assurance practice
