Proof of English Facility

English is the language of instruction and examination at U of Toronto, and success in our degree programs requires a high level of English language proficiency. Applicants whose first language (i.e. the first language you learned at home as a child) is not English may be requested to provide proof of English facility by providing acceptable scores in one of the recognized English Facility tests.* Electronic data (or official score reports if the testing agency is not among those who submit electronically) must be sent directly from the testing agency and must be received by the Faculty by May 31, 2019 for consideration for admission in September 2019.

English Language Facility

The following table illustrates the types of applicant who will be required to present proof of English facility.

First Language
English You are not required to provide proof of English facility
French How many years have you studied in the Canadian school system?
Four years or more of full-time study achieving satisfactory academic progress.
You are not required to provide proof of English facility.
Less than four years satisfactory full-time study.
You must present proof of English facility.
Language other than English or French How many years have you studied in an English language school system in a country where the dominant language is English?
Four years or more of full-time study achieving satisfactory academic progress.
You are not required to provide proof of English facility.
Less than four years satisfactory full-time study.
You must present proof of English facility.

Applicants required to present proof of English facility must arrange to take one of the acceptable tests listed below in time for the official test scores to be sent directly from the testing agency to the Faculty no later than May 31, 2019.

Please note that some test results are not available for up to six weeks after the test date. As a result, it is recommended you choose an early test date to allow your scores to be received well in advance of the deadline. Unless otherwise notified, applicants required to present proof of English facility must arrange for re-testing if they do not achieve the minimum required scores indicated below.

If you are, or have ever been, a registered degree student at the University of Toronto you are not required to present an English facility test score for admission consideration for the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy since you have already satisfied the University of Toronto English facility requirement. However, this applies only to students who are, or were, registered at the University of Toronto as degree students and does NOT apply to visiting students (i.e. students taking courses at the University of Toronto on a letter of permission).

As well, please note that most testing agencies will not issue scores older than two years. As a result, you must arrange for re-testing if you are not, or have never been, a registered degree student at the University of Toronto and your scores are older than two years.

The following test results are acceptable:

1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Test of Written English (TWE)
