Course Overview

This course is designed to introduce learners with selected topics in nephrology and to develop knowledge and skills to manage common complications related to chronic kidney disease. The course will use a case-based approach with emphasis on the integration and application of fundamental principles to specific clinical situations. All material will be delivered on-line in this course with opportunities for learners to pose questions to an expert in the field. Each lesson will incorporate active learning activities for the learners to complete to facilitate knowledge and skill development.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Understand Key Nephrology Concepts

  • Explain fundamental nephrology concepts, including kidney function, pathophysiology, and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

2. Identify and Manage Common CKD Complications

  • Recognize and describe common complications associated with CKD, such as electrolyte imbalances, hypertension, and anemia.

3. Apply Clinical Knowledge to Case-Based Scenarios

  • Use a case-based approach to integrate knowledge of nephrology principles and apply them to diagnose and manage complications in clinical scenarios.

4. Utilize Expert Resources for Enhanced Understanding

  • Formulate and pose relevant questions to nephrology experts to deepen comprehension and clarify complex concepts.

Competencies

Upon completing the course, students will have developed competencies in:

1. Clinical Problem-Solving in Nephrology

  • Proficiency in assessing and formulating treatment approaches for CKD and its common complications, using evidence-based clinical reasoning.

  • Ability to consider patient-specific factors in CKD management and personalize interventions to improve patient outcomes.

  • Skills in synthesizing theoretical nephrology concepts with practical applications through case-based learning.
