Therapeutic, Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Studies
Sunnybrook Health Science Centre (SHSC) is a university-owned institution with research and education being recognized priorities. Similarly, the Department of Pharmacy at SHSC is committed to drug-related and practice-based research. Dr. Hardy, as Departmental Coordinator of Education and Clinical Programs, has demonstrated a long-standing interest in research addressing issues of practical clinical relevance in the areas of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, therapeutics and education. In addition, Dr. Hardy continues to develop and coordinate educational programs for undergraduate pharmacy students, PharmD students and pharmacy residents. Priority is given to assisting students in the personal development of their clinical, educational and teaching skills.
Historically, emphasis has been placed on research studies in selected practice areas consistent with the research programs of the institution. Specifically, research has been conducted in elderly patients with major depression and bipolar disorders (Brain Sciences Program and Veterans and Community Program). The intent of past research was to obtain a better understanding of the effects of age on drug disposition; to develop rational population-based dosing guidelines; and to examine the relationship between the serum concentrations of a given drug and therapeutic outcome and/or toxicity. More recently, research has been linked to the impact of developing new educational programs.
