The PharmD for Pharmacists (PFP) program is designed for experienced pharmacists and recent graduates who have a Bachelors’ (or equivalent) Pharmacy degree and wish to obtain a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. 

PFP students undertake experiential education in a flexible format throughout the duration of their program. Students will enrol in Direct Patient Care (DPC) courses where they will provide patient care in settings that may include institutional (hospital), community, ambulatory. Students may also enrol in Non-direct Patient Care (NDPC) courses that involve a variety of settings.

We want to emphasize the importance of pharmacy science facilitated by knowledge and research, and delivered with professionalism and compassion. Our graduates will deliver the enhanced scope of practice called for by the Canadian healthcare system. 

Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (Required Courses)

Students must successfully complete a minimum of four courses:

  • 3 Direct Patient Care (DPC) courses
  • 1 Elective (DPC or NDPC) course

Students may complete an optional elective rotation in place of a sixth pharmacotherapy course. Experiential courses can be completed concomitantly or interspersed with didactic course work, once a student has completed the following three courses:

  • Foundations for Advanced Pharmacy Practice
  • Critical Appraisal
  • One Pharmacotherapy course

The final two DPC rotations can be undertaken once all didactic work is completed. 

In each rotation, students are guided, supervised, and assessed on a day-to-day basis by a preceptor. 

Students are supported by a team of Experiential Education Course Coordinators, Office of Experiential Education (OEE) staff, the Director of the OEE, and related Program Directors. This team provides academic oversight on all aspects related to experiential course delivery, and monitoring and assessment of students during experiential courses.

Note: PFP students must achieve the same learning outcomes (AFPC 2017) and objectives as PharmD students while on their rotations.

Assessments

Students in APPE rotations are assessed according to the educational outcomes of the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada (AFPC) for First Professional Degree Programs in Pharmacy. These educational outcomes are care provider, communicator, collaborator, leader-manager, health advocate, scholar and professional.
